Q: What are Will’s 5 Recommended LED Lights for Pro Hybrid Lighting?

Ready to buy your first serious continuous lights for shooting pro level talking portraiture? Confused on what size, shape, style of LED light you may need?
For over 16 years, I have been testing photo tools for the manufacturers and for ShootSmarter / Discovermirrorless as the well know as the guy that tells it like it really is.

As coach of the Hybrid Heroes Talent Team, I also guide 14 pro photographers into shooting photo+video+audio and is proud to announce my first group of five continuous lights that live up to his expectations and are ready for daily use. In this video, I choose one specific model in each of the various shapes and sizes of LED lights, from small can sized LEDs, to ringlites, to full 1×1 panels, then report the color and output power you can expect when using these tools under “Real Life” shooting conditions.

“Forget the makers claims of color temp, CRI and wattage equivalencies, most of that is hype gathered from incorrect or biased measurements, instead we show what these lights really do with output power measured at 800ISO, 1/60th second and meter the aperture value to a tenth of an f stop so you know what you’re buying.”

So if you want to know which LED lights the hybrid pro’s on Panasonic’s Lumix Luminary Talent Team, Fuji’s Elite Imaging Talent Team, and DiscoverMirrorless’ Hybrid Heroes Talent Team are using…why not ask their leader, mentor, coach and trainer – Me!

Great post!! I am very interested in the DraCast products. I do own the Vagabond battery system from Paul C Buff and am glad to see they are compatible. This was extremely helpful.

    Hi Will,
I just ordered lights from BandH Photo. I haven’t opened them yet. How did I do compared to your selections. You’d know more about the green shifts than I would. I’m just getting started. I need these lights for interviews and/or red carpet or convention hall run and gun interviews. I picked products that were very portable and easy to package for porting.

For on camera (“run and gun” and extra light in interview) … I got:

    GELEDP312T — LED-7100T 312 LED Variable-Color On-Camera Light $189-

For on interviews (at locations) … I got:

ican $1619 after rebate about $1200.
    IKIB508KIT — IB508-KIT 3- Point Bi-Color Light Kit–+IB508-KIT+3-+Point+Bi-Color+Light+Kit&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma&Top+Nav-Search=

Could I have done better for hybrid shooting with cases and all accessories included?

Would you suggest something to grow into and on to this package, such as additional lights with barn doors or flash or how to add a softbox?

Will, have you tested the Genaray products? If so, what were your results?

  4. Hey Bud! Yes, we are BIG into DraCast as well as the smaller Fiilex brand as well. Both the Vagabond and the Ion are terrific with the edge going to the Vagabond for price, or the Ion for a longer runtime. Hard to pick.

  5. Hi Guys! Looks like I need to add these lights into our testing. Please forgive me for overlooking these, I’ll get right on it.

Thanks Will, I am particularly interested in your assessment of the Genaray SpectroLED-14 and -9
